DONATE TODAY: SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY IN QUEENSLAND

Staff spotlight: Isabella Kwon

Montrose Physiotherapist Isabella Kwon enjoys being able to watch her clients grow, develop and achieve their goals. And while she works with a diverse range of clients, Isabella has developed a strong passion for working with infants and children with neuromuscular conditions.

Having learnt about Montrose’s reputation as a leading therapy provider at University, Isabella was drawn to Montrose because of the evidence-based clinical supervision program.

“Depending on your skill set and where you envision yourself in the future as a therapist, you are supported by a more experienced clinician who can help you unpack case studies, discuss queries, and provide a space where you can explore, learn and develop your clinical reasoning skills.

“I came to Montrose with a mixed set of skills and working here has really allowed me to consolidate my knowledge and develop an area of expertise,” Isabella explains.

Isabella said access to clinical supervision which was tailored to her learning goals, enabled her to feel supported to pursue neuromuscular paediatrics.

“Having exposure to a diverse caseload and being able to work with children with conditions like SMA, also really contributed to my desire to complete additional study in that space,” she said.

Montrose therapist presents at a conference

Isabella has presented at the Queensland Children’s Hospital for the Queensland Paediatric Physiotherapy Clinical Network. She provided insight into how physiotherapy can contribute to the care of children with SMA.

Since completing clinical professional development in movement assessment, facilitation and therapy strategies for neuromuscular conditions, Isabella has had the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

“I’ve been involved in clinical presentations to share my knowledge in neuromuscular care, networking with health care teams and mentoring less experienced therapists,” Isabella explains.

Working with a range of neuromuscular conditions including Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and other physical disabilities, Isabella knows how important it is for families to have support when working through diagnosis and treatment.

“I am passionate about providing a holistic approach to therapy and empowering our clients and their families. I really enjoy building meaningful relationships with my clients and working with their families as team.

As well as working closely with clients and their families, Isabella enjoys collaborating with the other therapists in her team. She said Montrose’s strong multidisciplinary approach provides therapists with the opportunity to share their clinical knowledge and enhance client outcomes.

“When supporting children with neuromuscular conditions, it is beneficial to work together with our OTs. We have the ability to provide joint therapy sessions, which enables functional goals to be addressed as a team.

“Together with an OT, I can support clients with assistive technology needs, to promote their independence and participation in activities of their choice,” Isabella explains.

Isabella loves being able to play a part in the development and growth of her clients and often supports them through significant life transitions.

“It is a joy to watch my clients grow and explore different skills, and be involved in different aspects of their life like visiting them at kindergarten and seeing them go to school,” she said.

In this video, Isabella supports a client with SMA Type 1. Through a series of age-appropriate activities Isabella ensures three-year-old Winnie works on her ability to stand, walk and kneel. Isabella enjoys developing play based therapy sessions as they are motivating and engaging for children. Here Winnie practices supported standing in a grocery shopping activity and weight shifting as she takes the food back to the barn animals. Read more about Winnie’s story here.
