Most people with diagnoses of Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome will be able to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The exact amount of funding and types of support will depend on the age of the participant and the severity of their condition.
NDIS eligibility is based on reduced capacity in one or more of the following areas:
The application process to the NDIS is the same for all conditions. Find out more here.
Children with Autism 0-6 years old
If your child is aged 0-6 years, you’ll meet with an NDIS early childhood partner and be part of the Early Childhood, Early Intervention (ECEI) scheme.
When you meet the ECEI partner, you’ll discuss your child’s needs and goals. You’ll talk about any supports your child already receives, how they manage currently with daily activities, and what additional support you think your child needs.
Your ECEI partner will work with you to decide on the supports your child and family need. This can include:
In some cases, your child may move straight to an individual NDIS plan
Children with Autism over 6 years old
If your child is seven or older you’ll meet with an NDIA planner or an NDIS local area coordination partner.
Again, you will look at existing supports and future support your child may require to meet their goals. Everyone’s goals are different but typical goals for a child with autism may include:
You and the NDIA planner will work together to develop an individual NDIS plan for your child. Once approved, you can start looking for service providers to deliver the agreed supports.
What supports can I get for children with autism under the NDIS?
