Physiotherapy

Paediatric Physiotherapy involves systematic assessment of musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory disorders and management of these by natural methods based on movement, manual therapy and also provision of equipment.

This includes:

  • Identifying areas of dysfunction which affect development and performance
  • Devising a management plan to promote optimal function
  • Management strategies may include but are not limited to
  • Activity programmes to improve joint range, muscle strength, muscle control and quality of movement
  • Treatment for postural stability and positioning for optimal postural function
  • Prescription of equipment to optimise mobility and posture, for example, wheelchairs and walking aids
  • Serial casting for lower limbs to increase joint range and to provide more normal weight bearing for walking
  • Prescription of splints and orthoses to improve the function of the lower limb
  • Aquatic physiotherapy where properties of water such as warmth and buoyancy can be used to assist or resist movement depending upon the goals of the programme
  • Activities for fitness and flexibility as part of promoting normal health and development
  • Specific techniques to measure, monitor and to help maintain respiratory function

The Physiotherapists also provide the Hydrotherapy Programme.
